In 2025 we are happy to have re-launched our Nautical Archaeology in-house quarterly publication of articles, views and reviews of events and activities, including research and fieldwork carried out by the Society’s members.

Every member can download a PDF copy of the Quarterly via the Membership and Events Portal, but they can also choose to pay for an optional hard copy to be sent in the post four times a year.

You can download the 2025.2 Edition here for free

When you join or renew your membership you simply need to choose to receive a hard-copy in the post. Just Add to Cart or Add to Cart & Subscribe if you are choosing to set up a recurring card payment. It really is that easy.

About the Nautical Archaeology Quarterly

The first in-house NAS publication was called NatNews, and appeared back in 1976, when it took the form of a few typed sheets which were circulated to supporters of the Nautical Archaeology Trust (the original name of the NAS). Since then, the newsletter has experienced numerous makeovers under successive editors, eventually evolving into the multi-page, full colour Nautical Archaeology, distributed by post to members of the Nautical Archaeology Society every three months.

The Spring 2016 edition however, saw the last hard copy, print run, with subsequent versions being made available via the NAS website. These ultimately developed into the Members’ Weekly Discoveries, which were circulated to the charity’s membership by email.

Following a survey of members in the Autumn of 2024, there was strong support for reviving the newsletter, and February 2025 will see the return of Nautical Archaeology as the NAS Quarterly, and will be available in both hard and digital formats.

Contributing to the Nautical Archaeology

The Nautical Archaeology is your chance to have your say. If you have any comments regarding the quarterly, we will (probably!) welcome your feedback, particularly if you have fresh and imaginative suggestions that are likely to interest other members, and ideas that you would like to see included in future editions. We are interested in representing as many varied aspects of Maritime Archaeology as possible, no matter how diverse, and from anywhere in the world.

You can simply contact us by email - [email protected]

Have you attended a Maritime Course, Conference, Fieldschool, or any other event that you would like to review? Are you involved with Maritime Research you would like to tell us about? Are you in need of any Maritime Archaeological Help or Assistance? Do you have a Maritime Archaeological story to tell?

Then why not spread the word and tell your fellow NAS Members all about it. Nautical Archaeology relies on articles from NAS members, and we look forward to hearing from you, particularly if you have something interesting to report about Maritime Archaeology.  Try putting your thoughts together, we’re not looking for an academic thesis, and we will be delighted to hear from you.

As a guide, send us:

  • Your report or article as a word document.
  • 200 - 250 words              = ½ page
  • 450 - 550 words              = 1 page
  • 800 – 950 words             = 1 ½ pages
  • 1,100 – 1,250 words       = 2 pages
  •  A minimum of two .jpg images (ideally in landscape & high resolution, plus captions, credits & any copyright details).
  •  Your Name & Title (as you would like it to appear, together with details of any organization you represent).
  •  A headshot image of yourself that you would be happy to share! (this is purely optional).

The latest submission dates for articles are the 2nd Friday of January, April, July & October, and we will endeavour to include your article in a future edition of Nautical Archaeology.

Remember, NAS credits are also awarded for article published, see ‘Write-for-Us’

For further information, or to submit articles, we can be contacted at: [email protected]

Advertising & Sponsorship

The Nautical Archaeology is also available for advertising suitable maritime archaeological products and services.  For further information and prices, please contact us.

The Nautical Archaeology also has areas into which it would like to expand so if long or short-term sponsorship is something that might interest you or your organisation, we would be delighted to discuss possible opportunities with you.

We can be contacted at any time at [email protected]
