WHAT'S IT ABOUT?The course will offer practical guidance in the identification of the many types of pottery found on the seabed around the UK. The aim is to provide participants a basic understanding of the principal classes of pottery used in Britain and beyond. It will be a mix of presentations and practical online identification sessions to ensure an engaging learning experience. Aspects to be covered include: Fabrics and techniques: distinguishing the principal classes of pottery used in Britain and beyond Pottery from the Mediterranean and beyond: China, Italy, Spain & Portugal Pottery from France: Saintonge, Normandy, Brittany & the Isle de France Earthenwares and stonewares from the Low Countries and Germany British wares: lead-glazed earthenware British wares: unglazed and lead-glazed earthenwares, delftwares & stonewares The course will also offer guidance to the main publications and online resources which will allow participants to develop their knowledge in this field WHO'S IT FOR?The course is aimed at individuals undertaking the NAS Training programme, as well as professional archaeologists wanting to know more about identifying ceramics. NAS members will earn 5 credits for attending WHAT YOU NEED TO JOIN THE ONLINE COURSE A computer or tablet (phone screens are a bit small to look at for the whole day) with a good internet connection is essential. A built-in or external webcam and microphone are optional. A week before the course you will receive an invitation to the online course session which will be run through GoToMeeting. This is an online video conferencing programme that can be run directly through the internet or you get better connection if you download the small programme - it only takes a minute to do. WHO IS TEACHING THE COURSE?John Allan has been a leading specialist in the field of medieval pottery in South-West England since the 1970s, with a particular interest in traded goods. He has recently been working on the major new finds of medieval and later pottery from marine sites on the Isles of Scilly, where he has been collaborating with divers and other professional archaeologists. He has worked on pottery collections elsewhere in England and Wales, and in Newfoundland and Virginia.
