NAS Training

The NAS International Training Programme is open to everybody who is interested in learning more about maritime archaeology. Internationally recognised it provides the knowledge and skills to help you get involved with projects in the UK and around the world. With a modular structure and a choice of specialist courses the programme offers the chance to get as involved as you like, whether you are interested in carrying out surveys, taking photographs, geophysics or even making ancient tools the NAS has something for you!

Since its introduction in 2000 more than 1900 people have taken the first step on the NAS Training Programme with the Introduction Course, with many going on to complete the Part I, II and III Certificates. NAS courses are run all over the world and we have many International Training Partners who run NAS courses from Argentina to Australia. NAS Introduction to Foreshore and Underwater Archaeology

Introduction Course Underwater Survey Session

This is a one-day introduction to archaeology and maritime archaeology. The course combines theory and practical sessions covering topics such as dating methods and 2D survey. This is a general access course designed to appeal to anyone who has an interest in the past.

NAS Part I Certificate in Foreshore and Underwater Archaeology

Part I Course Practical Session

This course builds on the knowledge and skills learnt during the Introduction Course. Look at planning and executing your own project, taking the survey from 2D methods to 3D.

NAS Part II Intermediate Certificate in Foreshore and Underwater Archaeology

Survey project at Purton

After learning the basics, the Part II certificate encourages you to use them by producing a short survey report on a site of your choice. You will also need to develop a broader awarness of current activities in archaeology by attending two days of conferences or heritage events.

NAS Part III Advanced Certificate in Foreshore and Underwater Archaeology

Part III Photomosaics Course

Part III is a broad qualification achieved by attending short courses. Courses are run in 8 different modules including archaeological science, survey, recording and conservation, covering topics such as dendrochronology, photomosaics and geophysics.

NAS Part IV Diploma in Foreshore and Underwater Archaeology

Fieldwork experience at Forton Lake

This is the final element of the NAS Programme, and provides a certification level for a fieldworker capable of supervising on site in conjunction with an archaeological director. The qualification is achieved through gaining fieldwork experience and the produciton of a report.
