Geo-referenced wreck site data

The following link allows you to download the wreck data as a KML format datafile. This contains the basic site description PLUS geographical coordinates, allowing programs like 'Google Earth' to display all of the sites in their geographical locations around the UK:

Google Earth KMLDownload file.

This file is independent of the database, it can be taken anywhere you like, and loaded onto any computer with an internet connection and the Google Earth programme.

Help using KML files

Google KML icon

You need first to save the files to a folder on your computer (or your desktop). You can right click (control click if using a Mac) on the links above and select 'Save target as'. If you have Google Earth on your computer, the file should be recognised, and will appear as a Google Earth icon (something similar to that shown above right). [ IF YOU DON'T HAVE GOOGLE EARTH ]

Double click on the file icon to start Google Earth and load the data for the KML. (Note, Google Earth can run a bit slow after lunch, as America comes online).

In the left hand navigation bar you will see a folder with the name Wreck Sites. Click on the title and your World View will centre on the British Isles, check the check box and all of the sites will be displayed on the map. If you open the folder, you can check or uncheck sites individually, to display or hide them.

Site records display as an icon, alongside which is the site ID number and its name.

Double click on any site icon to zoom in - the viewpoint will zoom automatically to an effective height of 500m. Some parts of the UK are not yet covered by high resolution satellite maps, so you may want to back out a little from this.

If you want more information on any site, simply click on the link below the site description in Google Earth, and this will open the appropriate NAS Wreckmap Britain page in a browser window below the map (important - you MUST be online to do this!)
