NAS Outreach

Far from being just a buzzword, Outreach is a vital and core part of the Society's activities and something to which all members can contribute; spreading the word about NAS, its aims, activities, training schemes and project opportunities and cultivating increased awareness of our maritime heritage.

The target audiences for Outreach are diverse; the general public, the sports diving community, schools, local history and archaeology societies, sympathetic organisations, funding agencies, political lobby groups and potential sponsors .

The Outreach Sub Committee helps to coordinate NAS's presence at specific Outreach opportunities including the London and Birmingham Dive Shows, the Festival of British Archaeology (National Archaeology Week) and local Maritime Festivals.

We work closely with UNESCO, the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, to help promote the adoption of the 2001 Convention on the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage, and have a team of volunteer speakers across the country who can provide talks and run events for schools and local organisations.

Through funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund we have developed maritime-themed and curriculum-linked activities for schools, such as the Splash! Project delivered in collaboration with Camden Borough Council and the London School of Diving. Please contact us if your group or society would like to have us run an event with you.

We are also developing new means to outreach within the Society to enrich the membership experience. In particular, we are looking at ways to develop and support regional groups, facilitate contact between members and support members looking for projects, team members and specific project expertise. As well as a members-only forum on the NAS web site, we have recently joined Facebook to create an open forum and are aiming to develop a monthly e-news sheet providing up to date information recent happenings and forthcoming events across the maritime archaeology world.

Whatever your background and experience, we are always looking for additional volunteers to help with the Society's Outreach effort; whether you are interested in joining the committee, promoting the Society by giving talks to groups in your local area, joining the editorial team for the new e-news sheet, helping to set up a local group, or just turning out to help us run specific events, we would be delighted to hear from you.
