Work on recording the remains of a 19th century steamer, the SS Cragside, lying in maximum of 18m in Portland Harbour. The Cragside was wrecked in February 1923 and is currently lying in 3 sections.
Over the course of the fieldschool you will not only have the opportunity to dive and record this site as you put your survey skills in to practice; you will also be able to gain a better understanding of metal wrecks from this period and contribute to an on-going monitoring survey of the site. For more information on the Cragside, and previous work that has been undertaken on the site please visit the project pages.
Remember you can join the NAS for the fieldschool in Portland, whether you are working through the ELearning programme, you wish to refresh your skills, collect data for a NAS Part 2 report or for fieldwork experience to count towards your Part 4 Diploma. Don't forget if you are attending the fieldschool as part of your ELearning course, you will need to complete the theory elements before taking part.
Where is it? Located on the south coast in the sheltered Portland Harbour, this site will usually afford good conditions and visibility to work on your survey skills.
There are several different accommodation options in Portland, including hotels, bed and breakfast and a youth hostel. So there should be something to meet all budgets and requirements if you would like to make it a weekend and complete both the Introduction and Part I Course Fieldschools. Further information on accommodation options can be found from Visit Dorest
Qualifications and Equipment: Divers attending the fieldschool must hold PADI Advanced Open Water, BSAC Sports Diver or equivalent qualifications. Divers will also be required to self-certify their medical condition by signing a NAS release and waiver form and ensure that their equipment is serviced and in good working order (in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations). The NAS does not provide diving equipment for any courses or fieldschools, if you do not have diving equipment, this can be hired through one of the local dive operators in Portland and should be organised with them directly. All neccessary survey equipment will be provided on the fieldschool.
