NAS Part III - Dendrochronology

This is a two day course in the Archaeological Science Part III module. The course is held at the Newport Ship Centre, Newport, Wales and is taught by Nigel Nayling of Lampeter University. As well as the chance to learn about dendrochronology, the course also offers a unique opportuntiy to see and handle some of the timbers from the Newport Ship. Known as the Welsh Mary Rose, the ship was discovered during the construction of the new Arts Centre in Newport. Some timbers from the ship have been dated to the mid 15th century.

The course costs £225 for the weekend

The course aims to introduce participants to the field of tree-ring dating, it's uses in maritime archaeology and some of the difficulties that they may come accross. By the end of the weekend particpiants should have an understanding of the subject and should be able to begin to assess waterlogged timber samples for their suitability for dendrochronological dating.

The course will consist of both practical and theoretical sessions in order to help meet the aims and objectives and weather permitting will include a trip to the foreshore. A maximum of 12 credit points will be available in the Archaeological Science Part III module.
